The cornerstone of the Master in Strategy & Management of International Business (SMIB) practical learning approach is the Asian Strategy Challenge (ASC). In this six-month consulting project, students work in teams to solve real business problems for Asian companies. This immersive experience provides students with firsthand exposure to the consulting profession while developing crucial analysis, problem-solving, and client management skills.
Jiaying Jin, a SMIB student transitioning from civil engineering to strategy consulting, describes her current ASC project: “Our mission is to create a strategic roadmap for an international food service company’s five-year expansion. It’s been challenging but deeply rewarding.” What began as an overwhelming task became a valuable learning opportunity through structured guidance and by applying strategic methodologies.
The ASC’s value extends across industries and interests. For Gong Ke, who aspires to work in consulting, the project offers a chance to apply strategic frameworks to authentic business challenges.
“It’s not just about learning frameworks—it’s about learning how to collaborate, present, and solve real business problems under pressure,” she notes, emphasizing how the experience prepares students for consulting careers.
International Study Trips: Business in a Global Context
Beyond the ASC, SMIB students gain international exposure through study trips to different Asian countries. These trips offer insights into regional business practices and cultural nuances. These trips combine company visits, meetings with executives, and cultural immersion to provide a comprehensive understanding of business in diverse Asian markets.
For Gong, the study trip to Vietnam was transformative. “It was a perfect mix of cultural immersion and strategic insight,” she shares. These experiences help students contextualize classroom concepts within the specificities of Asian business environments—valuable knowledge for those planning international careers.
The study trips also serve as networking opportunities, connecting students with industry professionals across the region. This exposure to different business models and approaches broadens students’ perspectives and enhances their cross-cultural competence, a critical skill in today’s globalized business environment.
Leadership and Social Impact Beyond the Classroom
ESSEC SMIB encourages students to extend their learning beyond formal coursework through student-led initiatives, clubs, and social impact projects. These activities allow students to apply their strategic knowledge to address real-world challenges while developing leadership skills.
Mara Mittelman exemplifies this hands-on leadership approach as Vice President of Stratngo Consulting. In this pro bono consulting association, she and her team strategically support non-profit organizations.
“Our current project focuses on helping a Cambodian NGO improve access to higher education for young girls,” Mara explains, demonstrating how SMIB students apply their business acumen to create positive social impact.
Additionally, students like Mara channel their entrepreneurial spirit into creating new community initiatives. As the founder of the ESSEC APAC Boxing Club, she organizes weekly training sessions open to students of all skill levels.
“It’s a great way to build community, stay active, and promote a sport that has been an important part of my personal and professional development,” showcasing how extracurricular activities complement classroom learning.
Gong similarly found value in her involvement with the Bureau des Étudiants (BDE), where she helped organize events fostering cultural exchange and social connection. “These experiences helped me build confidence, especially in English, and made me feel part of a close-knit community,” she explains.
Gong advises future students: “Work on your language skills early, be bold to ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity—whether it’s a club, a case competition, or a study trip. The faculty is supportive, and the program is incredibly rewarding if you take initiative.”
Through these hands-on experiences, SMIB students don’t just learn about strategy and management—they live it, preparing them for impactful careers in consulting, business development, and beyond.
