A Globally Rooted Background
With roots in China and experience spanning four countries from Canada to Australia, Jiaying Jin brings a unique blend of analytical rigor and international perspective to her journey through the Master in Strategy & Management of International Business (SMIB) program at ESSEC APAC. From managing construction projects in Shanghai to driving strategic insights for global firms, she is shaping a future in consulting with clarity, purpose, and passion.
“I’ve always been curious about how things connect—whether in engineering systems or in global business,” Jiaying says. That mindset laid the foundation for her transition from engineering into strategy consulting.
A Strategic Pivot with SMIB
Seeking a career pivot into international strategy consulting, Jiaying was drawn to the SMIB program for its immersive, hands-on approach and global orientation. The one-year format was a plus point, allowing efficient career transition. “The small cohort size and international diversity made it stand out to me. I wanted a space where meaningful exchange of ideas could happen—not just between professor and student, but peer to peer.”
The interactive nature of the SMIB classes was one of her favorite aspects of the program. “The professors push us to think critically, often using simulation games and role-play scenarios. One class had us analyze a complex issue from different stakeholder perspectives—an eye-opening experience that completely changed how I approach strategy.”
Another factor that influenced her decision was the strength of the ESSEC alumni network. “I spoke with several alumni in Shanghai. Their experiences and career paths were inspiring. I saw SMIB as more than a degree—it felt like joining a lifelong professional community.”
Consulting in the Real World
With a strong foundation in project management and engineering, Jiaying has always gravitated toward problem-solving. But consulting offered a new kind of challenge. “I love how every project is different. It’s about breaking down complexity, identifying patterns, and crafting tailored solutions that drive real impact.”
In the Asian Strategy Challenge, Jiaying and her team worked on a consulting project with an international food service company. “Our mission is to create a strategic roadmap for their five-year expansion. It’s been challenging but deeply rewarding.”
Initially overwhelmed, her team found clarity through structured guidance and by applying market sizing, benchmarking, and strategic methodologies. “This project is teaching me not just the ‘what,’ but the ‘how’—how to adapt, collaborate, and problem-solve under pressure.”
She’s also excited for the upcoming study trip to Ho Chi Minh City, where she’ll gain insight into Southeast Asia’s dynamic business environment. “Vietnam is emerging fast, and seeing that transformation up close will be invaluable.”
Representing Her Cohort
In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, Jiaying also serves as the Student Representative for the SMIB 2024–2025 cohort. Her role involves facilitating communication between students and faculty, collecting feedback, and helping improve the overall program experience.
“One challenge has been balancing diverse viewpoints in a small cohort. Everyone’s voice matters, and that can be tricky. So I created a feedback system using Microsoft Forms and WhatsApp to ensure every perspective is heard in a constructive way.”
Advice to Future SMIB Candidates
Jiaying’s advice to future SMIB students is straightforward: “Be proactive.”
With so many opportunities packed into one year, she emphasizes the importance of early engagement and strong time management. “Whether it’s the ASC, classes, or recruiting—it all moves quickly. Stay organized.”
Most importantly, she encourages students to embrace the discomfort that comes with change. “This program will push you out of your comfort zone—but that’s where growth happens. Come with an open mind, and you’ll walk away not just with knowledge, but with transformation.”
Looking Ahead: A Strategist for the Future
As she nears the end of the SMIB program, Jiaying envisions a future in strategy consulting, helping organizations navigate complexity and pursue sustainable growth. “I bring a structured, analytical mindset from engineering, and I’ve learned to translate that into actionable insights for business.”
From construction sites in Shanghai to consulting projects in Southeast Asia, Jiaying Jin’s journey exemplifies the adaptability, resilience, and global outlook that define the SMIB experience at ESSEC APAC.
