When Gong Ke made the decision to transition from chemical engineering to international business, it wasn’t just a career pivot—it was a leap into an entirely new world. Originally from China, Gong Ke completed her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering before enrolling in the Master in Strategy and Management of International Business (SMIB) program at ESSEC APAC.
“I was drawn to ESSEC because of its reputation, its inclusive and diverse culture, and my own dream of entering the consulting industry,” she shares. For Gong Ke, the program represented an opportunity to not only broaden her academic knowledge but also to expand her worldview.
A Global Program for Future Consultants
Originally from China, Gong Ke had never studied abroad before joining the SMIB program in Singapore. But what drew her in wasn’t just international exposure—it was ESSEC’s reputation for academic rigor, hands-on learning, and strong industry alignment.
“I was looking for a program that could help me pivot quickly, while still offering depth,” she shared. “ESSEC stood out for its consulting focus and inclusive, multicultural environment.”
The case-based approach, paired with intensive team projects and real-world applications, has helped Gong Ke build both hard and soft skills. “It’s not just about learning frameworks—it’s about learning how to collaborate, present, and solve real business problems under pressure.”
Real-World Learning, Global Exposure
One of the standout moments of the program so far? The SMIB study trip to Vietnam, which offered students a hands-on look at Southeast Asia’s fast-evolving business landscape. “It was a perfect mix of cultural immersion and strategic insight,” she shared.
Gong Ke’s consulting ambitions were also shaped by previous roles with Bain & Company, where she supported projects across consumer goods and other sectors. “What struck me most was the variety of work and the sharp thinking of my mentor. That experience confirmed my passion for consulting.”
A Collaborative and Inclusive Community
Beyond academics, the SMIB program offers a vibrant student life. Gong Ke is an active member of the Bureau des Étudiants (BDE), where she helped to organize events that foster cultural exchange and social connection. “These experiences helped me build confidence, especially in English, and made me feel part of a close-knit community.”
She emphasized the value of a collaborative cohort, where students come from diverse backgrounds but share a common drive. “Everyone is motivated and open-minded. You grow not just through the curriculum, but through the people around you.”
Eyes on the Future
For prospective students, Gong Ke has one key piece of advice: be proactive.
“Work on your language skills early, be bold to ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity—whether it’s a club, a case competition, or a study trip. The faculty is supportive, and the program is incredibly rewarding if you take initiatives.”
Looking ahead, Gong Ke hopes to continue in consulting, or explore other industries where strategic thinking, creativity, and human connection are key. “Whatever I do, I want to bring value to people and keep learning across industries.”
