For Adrien Rivet, the decision to leave France and join ESSEC Asia-Pacific in Singapore was a commitment to broaden his worldview and redefine his professional path. With a double bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Quantitative Economics, followed by a master’s degree in Random Modelling, Adrien arrived at ESSEC with a strong technical foundation and a clear ambition: to navigate the intersection of finance, geopolitics, and public policy on a global stage.
“I didn’t get the chance to study abroad during my previous degrees, so joining ESSEC’s APAC campus felt like an exciting new beginning,” Adrien shares. “Singapore’s cultural diversity and role as a regional business hub made it the perfect place to grow both personally and professionally.”
An Academic Path Bridging Europe and Asia
ESSEC’s flexibility and international reach played a major role in Adrien’s decision. He chose the Business Management in Asia track, drawn by electives that integrate Asian case studies and regional business insights.
“What stood out to me was how the program connected theory to the cultural and geopolitical realities of the region,” Adrien says. “Courses like Geopolitics in Asia and Asian Economies taught us to question our assumptions and think strategically about interdependence.”
At the same time, Adrien pursued a double degree with ESM Saint-Cyr, the prestigious French military academy. It was a natural fit for someone with a deep interest in defense, public policy, and international affairs.
“This program combines strategic thinking with personal development, and challenges us to grow through physical and mental training. It’s intense, but transformative.”
From Predictive Modeling to Real-World Impact
Before ESSEC, Adrien interned at RTE, France’s electricity transmission system operator. There, he developed a probabilistic model to predict ruptures in overhead power lines due to environmental stressors like lightning and heat.
“It was fascinating work—combining data science, safety, and public infrastructure. But I realized that I didn’t just want to advise. I wanted to act on those insights and take real responsibility.”
This drive to lead, rather than observe, is what ultimately brought Adrien to ESSEC.
“ESSEC felt like the place where I could sharpen my strategic lens and build the skills to step into decision-making roles.”
Looking Ahead: Strategy, Energy, and Global Affairs
Today, Adrien’s career goals are rooted in geopolitical strategy, consulting, and energy policy. He envisions starting his career in consulting—translating strategic insights into actionable solutions for firms navigating global complexity.
“Markets, infrastructure, compliance—everything is touched by geopolitics now. I want to help companies and governments make smart, resilient decisions in this uncertain environment.”
Eventually, he hopes to join a public institution or international organization focused on long-term energy strategy.
“Energy sits at the center of climate change, economic resilience, and national security. Helping shape policy in this space is how I want to make a meaningful impact.”
Growth Through Community
Adrien made space for growth in other ways beyond academics. One standout moment was performing in The Sound of ESSEC, the APAC campus talent show.
“Playing with a band was new for me. It pushed me creatively and reminded me how important collaboration is—whether on stage or in leadership.”
He’s also embraced Singapore’s culture and community through conversations, quiet reflection, and exploring the city’s green spaces and rooftop bars.
“This year was about more than just classes. It was about reconnecting with my goals, discovering a new part of the world, and meeting people who challenge and inspire me.”
Advice to Future Students
“Be authentic. ESSEC is a place where you can be yourself and grow into who you want to become. Don’t try to fit into a mold—build your own path. The flexibility and openness of the program make that possible.”
