Michel Henry Verhasselt’s route to finance was far from typical. Originally from Belgium and previously based in Germany, his academic journey began with Russian translation studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Today, his path reflects a deep passion for language, logic, and markets, channeling these multidisciplinary interests into a specialized focus on FinTech. He is now preparing for a fast-moving financial future while immersed in Singapore’s dynamic ecosystem.

His transition into finance was ignited by firsthand experience: he gained professional exposure in sales and marketing roles while simultaneously trading his own capital independently. This combination of professional work and personal initiative sparked his desire to structure and deepen his financial skill set. Michel views his specialization in FinTech as a way to “future-proof” his career and remain adaptable in a world of increasing complexity, as he genuinely enjoys both the technical and conceptual sides of finance.

The Role of Location and Institutional Resources

A key factor in Michel’s decision to pursue his studies here was the location. While he valued the strong industry ties and practical focus of the institution, he was equally motivated by the fact that ESSEC Asia-Pacific is situated in Singapore, which he sees as a global finance hub where he hopes to settle long-term.

Within this environment, Michel has accessed resources that he describes as “genuinely cutting-edge”. He notes that the experience has been both rewarding and challenging, with highlights including access to industry leaders and engaging in collaborative projects.

Valuing Uncertainty and Blending Creativity

Among his professional interests, options trading and derivatives hold particular importance. Michel is fascinated by the precision involved in valuing uncertainty and appreciates the “satisfying coherence to no-arbitrage pricing”. He views the markets as inherently multidisciplinary, functioning as a “live snapshot of our collective beliefs about the world”.

Michel brings a thoughtful, introspective side to his rigorous financial focus. Outside of his studies, he enjoys writing poetry, finds energy in nature and art, and studies Chinese when time permits. He reflects that creativity and finance are “more connected than people assume”. On campus, he actively translates theory into practical skill by co-leading an options trading fund alongside two fellow traders.

Looking toward the future, Michel aims to join a proprietary trading firm or a discretionary hedge fund, though he is also prepared to continue independent trading at a self-sustaining scale.

Advice for Leveraging the ESSEC Ecosystem

Reflecting on his journey, Michel encourages incoming students to fully leverage the ESSEC ecosystem. He stresses the invaluable nature of networking opportunities, including industry seminars, company visits, and connections with alumni.

Crucially, he advises students to treat their coursework as a “platform for real-world experimentation”. He emphasizes that pursuing hands-on experience is essential, as this is what ultimately makes students more capable and confident.

Michel’s Singapore: A Personal Map

Michel’s life in Singapore is characterized by blending natural exploration with the vibrancy of the city. His favorite activities include walking through the skyscraper-lined city center and cycling along the Rail Corridor. He also enjoys exploring nature trails and local cafes.

For quiet contemplation and skyline views, he recommends the Bukit Batok Nature Reserve. Other personal recommendations include Duxton Hill for after-class drinks and Led Zeppelin & Co., a Hi-Fi café in Sim Lim Square known for its great ambiance. When needing a quick meal near campus, his go-to options include Subway, as well as carrot cake, youtiao and ginger congee from the local shops in One North.
