Emerson Huang’s journey to the ESSEC Master in Management (MiM) program was rooted in a desire for flexibility, global exposure, and a challenge that would shape both his academic and personal growth. Originally from Taiwan, Emerson arrived at ESSEC Asia-Pacific eager to step outside his comfort zone and fully embrace an international learning experience.

“The MiM program stood out to me because of its strong global orientation and the flexibility it offers,” he shares. “From academic tracks to double degree opportunities, it’s a program designed for students who want to build a truly international career.”

Choosing the Fintech and European Management Tracks

Once in Singapore, Emerson decided to specialize in the Fintech Track. Designed for students looking to deepen their finance knowledge, the track gave him the opportunity to study advanced finance topics alongside Master in Finance (MiF) students.

“It’s rigorous but rewarding. The coursework is both analytical and technical, which is exactly what I wanted to prepare for a career in the financial industry.”

He also opted for the European Management Track, a multi-country experience co-designed by top institutions across Europe. This choice will soon take him to Copenhagen Business School, where he’ll specialize in ESG investment and ESG reporting—areas that align closely with his long-term academic and professional goals.

“It’s goes beyond switching campuses—it’s about switching perspectives and gaining new tools to understand the world of business.”

Giving Back Through Local Volunteering

Beyond academics, Emerson has found meaningful engagement through volunteer work with FaithActs, a local NGO in Singapore that supports children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Every week, I help them with their homework and design creative activities to keep them engaged. It reminds me of my own childhood—curious, sometimes resistant to homework, but full of imagination.”

He finds these moments grounding and fulfilling. “Their sincerity and joy give me a break from academic pressure, and I hope I can bring them a little more confidence and happiness in return.”

Advice for Future MiM Candidates

Reflecting on his journey, Emerson encourages prospective students to come with an open mind and a willingness to embrace new experiences.

“This program brings together people from all kinds of academic and cultural backgrounds. Whether or not you’ve studied business before, there’s something here for everyone—just be proactive and ready to step out of your comfort zone.”

Singapore Favorites: Food, Fun, and Views

Living in Singapore has also allowed Emerson to explore a new side of student life. His favorite hangout spots?

  • Boat Quay: “Perfect for evening drinks with friends and a view of the skyline.”
  • Sentosa: “The beach bars and sunset views make it a great place to unwind.”

Food-wise, Emerson is a fan of:

  • Vietnamese Pho and Spring Rolls right across from campus: “Affordable, delicious, and super convenient.”
  • Chicken Tikka Masala at Lau Pa Sat: “The food and the atmosphere in the evening—especially with the satay stalls—are amazing.”

For relaxation, you’ll often find him cycling around Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay—soaking in the iconic views while getting some fresh air.
